Toyota 1KD-FTV Cylinder Head — Complete Fitment Guide

The 1KD-FTV is Toyota’s 3.0-litre D-4D common rail diesel, fitted to some of the most popular 4WDs and commercial vehicles in Australia. It’s a strong, high-torque engine — but it’s not immune to cylinder head issues, particularly when subjected to overheating or sustained high-load work.

This guide covers everything you need to confirm fitment, understand what’s included in a replacement head, and get your engine back on the road with confidence.

Fitment — Which Vehicles Use the 1KD-FTV?

  • Toyota Hilux (Surf/4Runner) — 2002 to 2015 (KUN16, KUN26 series)
  • Toyota HiAce — 2005 to 2019 (KDH series)
  • Toyota LandCruiser Prado — 2002 to 2009 (120 series, KDJ120, KDJ125)

The 1KD-FTV is a single engine code across all these applications — one head fits all, provided the engine hasn’t been modified. Always confirm your engine code on the engine bay sticker or compliance plate before ordering.

Common Causes of 1KD-FTV Head Failure

The 1KD-FTV runs high compression (17.9:1) and generates significant heat under load. The most common causes of head failure are:

  • Overheating events — even a single severe overheat can warp the head beyond tolerance
  • Coolant neglect — degraded coolant loses its anti-corrosion properties, leading to internal erosion of coolant passages
  • Head gasket failure — often a symptom of a warped head rather than the root cause
  • High-kilometre fatigue — common in Hilux and Hiace fleet vehicles with 300,000+ km

Symptoms to Watch For

  • White or grey smoke from the exhaust on a warm engine
  • Coolant loss without a visible external leak
  • Milky residue under the oil cap or on the dipstick
  • Engine overheating or temperature gauge spiking
  • Loss of power or rough running under load
  • Bubbling in the coolant overflow reservoir

If you’re seeing two or more of these symptoms together, the head is the most likely cause. Don’t delay — continued running will worsen the damage and risk scoring the block.

What’s Included in Our 1KD-FTV Complete Cylinder Head?

Our 1KD-FTV head is a complete assembly — meaning it includes the camshaft and all valve train components, ready to bolt on with minimal additional parts required.

  • Cylinder head (pressure tested, face-checked and refaced if necessary)
  • Camshaft (fitted and timed)
  • Rocker assembly
  • Valves, springs, retainers and stem seals
  • Cam caps torqued to spec

Note: A VRS (valve, rocker, stem seal) gasket set and head bolts are required for installation and are available separately — or as a kit.

Installation Tips

  • Always use new head bolts. The 1KD-FTV uses torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts that stretch on first use and must not be reused.
  • Check the block face. Have the block surface checked for flatness before fitting the new head. A warped block will cause the new head gasket to fail.
  • Replace the timing belt or chain. If the engine is apart, this is the time to do it. The 1KD-FTV uses a timing chain — inspect the tensioner and guides while you’re in there.
  • Flush the cooling system. If the head failed due to coolant issues, flush the entire system and refill with fresh coolant before start-up.
  • Torque in sequence. Follow the factory torque sequence and values. The 1KD-FTV head bolts require an angle-torque method — a torque angle gauge is essential.
  • Bleed the cooling system thoroughly before first start to avoid air pockets causing a false overheat.

Quality Assurance

  • 100% quality inspected before dispatch
  • Valve-to-seat compression tested
  • Head face checked and refaced if necessary
  • Professionally assembled in Australia
