Nissan ZD30 Cylinder Head — Complete Fitment Guide
The ZD30 is Nissan’s 3.0-litre direct injection diesel, fitted to the Navara D22 and Patrol Y61 — two of the most capable and widely used 4WDs in Australia. It’s also one of the engines with the highest rate of cylinder head failures in the Australian market, making correct replacement head selection critical.
The single most important thing to know before ordering a ZD30 head: Common Rail (CR) and Non-Common Rail (Non-CR) heads are NOT interchangeable. Fitting the wrong head will result in immediate engine damage.
CR vs Non-CR — How to Tell the Difference
The ZD30 engine was produced in two fuel system variants:
- Non-Common Rail (Non-CR): Earlier production. Uses a traditional mechanical injection pump. The head has a different combustion chamber design and injector bore configuration.
- Common Rail (CR): Later production. Uses a high-pressure common rail fuel system with solenoid-type injectors. The head is machined differently to suit the CR injector bodies.
The easiest way to confirm which variant you have:
- Check the engine bay compliance sticker — look for “ZD30DDTI” (Non-CR) vs “ZD30DDTi” or “ZD30CRDi” (CR)
- Look at the fuel rail — CR engines have a visible high-pressure fuel rail running along the top of the engine
- Check the build year — CR was introduced in the Patrol Y61 from approximately 2007 and the Navara D22 from approximately 2008 (though there is overlap — always confirm by engine code)

Fitment — Which Vehicles Use the ZD30?
Nissan Navara D22
- 2001 to 2015 (ZD30 engine)
- Non-CR: 2001–2007 approximately
- CR: 2008–2015 approximately
Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU)
- 2000 to 2016 (ZD30 engine)
- Non-CR: 2000–2006 approximately
- CR: 2007–2016 approximately
⚠️ Year ranges are a guide only. Build date and engine code are the definitive references. Always confirm before ordering.
Why Does the ZD30 Fail So Often?
The ZD30 has a well-documented reputation for head failures, particularly in the Non-CR variant. Contributing factors include:
- Marginal cooling system capacity — the factory cooling system has limited headroom; any degradation in coolant condition or flow accelerates head damage
- EGR system issues — EGR cooler failures can introduce coolant into the intake, causing hydrolocking and sudden overheating
- Oil starvation — the ZD30 is sensitive to oil level; running low causes rapid wear on the head and cam components
- Overheating events — even a brief overheat can warp the head, which then causes head gasket failure
Symptoms of ZD30 Head Failure
- White smoke from the exhaust (coolant burning in the combustion chamber)
- Coolant loss with no visible external leak
- Milky oil or frothy residue under the oil cap
- Engine overheating or temperature gauge spiking
- Rough idle or loss of power, particularly under load
- Bubbling in the coolant overflow bottle
What’s Included in Our ZD30 Complete Cylinder Head?
Our ZD30 heads are complete assemblies — camshaft, rocker gear, valves, springs and retainers all fitted and ready to install.
- Cylinder head (pressure tested, face-checked and refaced if necessary)
- Camshaft (fitted)
- Rocker assembly
- Valves, springs, retainers and stem seals
A VRS gasket set and head bolts are required for installation and are available separately or as a combined kit.
Installation Tips
- Always use new head bolts — ZD30 head bolts are torque-to-yield and must not be reused
- Check the block face for flatness before fitting — a warped block will cause the new gasket to fail
- Address the root cause — if the head failed due to EGR cooler failure or cooling system neglect, fix those issues before fitting the new head or you’ll be back to square one
- Flush the entire cooling system and refill with fresh coolant
- Torque in sequence using the factory angle-torque method — do not use a standard torque wrench alone
- Bleed the cooling system thoroughly before first start
Quality Assurance
- 100% quality inspected before dispatch
- Valve-to-seat compression tested
- Head face checked and refaced if necessary
- Professionally assembled in Australia
