Toyota 1KZ-TE & Mitsubishi 4D56U — Cylinder Head Fitment Guide
The Toyota 1KZ-TE and Mitsubishi 4D56U are two of the most enduring diesel engines in the Australian 4WD market. Both have powered iconic vehicles across decades of hard use — and both have well-known cylinder head vulnerabilities that owners should understand.
Toyota 1KZ-TE — Hilux & LandCruiser Prado (3.0L Diesel)
Fitment
- Toyota Hilux (Surf / 4Runner) — 1993 to 2002 (KZN series)
- Toyota LandCruiser Prado — 1996 to 2002 (90 series, KZJ90, KZJ95)
The 1KZ-TE is a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel. It was superseded by the 1KD-FTV in 2002. If your Prado or Hilux is a 2003 or later model, check whether it has the 1KD-FTV instead.
Why Does the 1KZ-TE Head Fail?
The 1KZ-TE has a documented history of head gasket and cylinder head failures, largely attributed to the original factory head bolt design. The bolts were prone to stretching and losing clamping force over time, allowing the head gasket to lift — particularly under sustained load or towing conditions.
Toyota issued a revised head bolt kit as a service update, but many vehicles in the fleet have never had this work done. Other contributing factors include:
- Overheating events — the 1KZ-TE is sensitive to heat; even a moderate overheat can warp the head
- Coolant neglect — degraded coolant accelerates internal corrosion
- High kilometres — the 90-series Prado and KZN Hilux fleet is now 25+ years old
Symptoms of 1KZ-TE Head Failure
- White smoke from the exhaust on a warm engine
- Coolant loss without a visible external leak
- Milky residue under the oil cap or on the dipstick
- Engine overheating, particularly under load or towing
- Loss of power or rough running
- Bubbling in the coolant overflow reservoir
What’s Included — 1KZ-TE Complete Cylinder Head
Our 1KZ-TE head is a complete assembly — camshaft, rocker gear, valves, springs and retainers all fitted and ready to install.
- Cylinder head (pressure tested, face-checked and refaced if necessary)
- Camshaft (fitted)
- Rocker assembly
- Valves, springs, retainers and stem seals
A VRS gasket set and head bolts are required for installation. Always use the updated head bolt kit — do not reuse the original bolts.
Mitsubishi 4D56U — Triton & Challenger (2.5L Turbo Diesel)
Fitment
- Mitsubishi Triton ML / MN — 2006 to 2015 (4D56U engine, 2.5L turbo diesel)
- Mitsubishi Challenger PB / PC — 2009 to 2015 (4D56U engine, 2.5L turbo diesel)
The 4D56U is the updated variant of the long-running 4D56 engine family. It features revised internals and improved emissions compliance over the earlier 4D56T. Confirm your engine code — the earlier 4D56T uses a different head specification.
Why Does the 4D56U Head Fail?
The 4D56U is a robust engine when properly maintained, but head failures do occur, typically linked to:
- Overheating — often caused by a failed thermostat, blocked EGR cooler, or coolant system neglect
- Timing belt failure — the 4D56U is an interference engine; a snapped timing belt causes immediate and severe engine damage including head damage
- High kilometres without coolant service — degraded coolant causes internal corrosion of the head passages
⚠️ Timing belt service is critical on the 4D56U. Mitsubishi specifies replacement at 100,000 km intervals. If you’re unsure when it was last done, replace it before it fails.
Symptoms of 4D56U Head Failure
- White or grey exhaust smoke on a warm engine
- Coolant loss without a visible external leak
- Milky oil or frothy residue under the oil cap
- Engine overheating or temperature gauge running high
- Loss of power, rough idle or misfiring
- Bubbling in the coolant overflow bottle
What’s Included — 4D56U Complete Cylinder Head
Our 4D56U head is a complete assembly — camshaft, rocker gear, valves, springs and retainers all fitted and ready to install.
- Cylinder head (pressure tested, face-checked and refaced if necessary)
- Camshaft (fitted)
- Rocker assembly
- Valves, springs, retainers and stem seals
A VRS gasket set and head bolts are required for installation and are available separately or as a combined kit.
Installation Tips (Both Engines)
- Always use new head bolts — both the 1KZ-TE and 4D56U use torque-to-yield bolts that must not be reused
- Check the block face for flatness before fitting the new head
- Flush the entire cooling system and refill with fresh coolant
- Address the root cause — fix any cooling system faults, EGR issues or timing belt concerns before fitting the replacement head
- Torque in sequence to factory specifications using the angle-torque method
- Bleed the cooling system thoroughly before first start to avoid air pockets
Quality Assurance
- 100% quality inspected before dispatch
- Valve-to-seat compression tested
- Head face checked and refaced if necessary
- Professionally assembled in Australia
